There are a number of people in furry fandom (especially from the early history of it - pre 1996) who are very open about stuff that is strange, stupid, doesn't make any sense, and is ultimately ironic, dishonest, excessively self-centered or hypocritical. I've noticed that anti-furries have always zeroed in on these personalities because they are very, very easy targets (weak links in the armor, so to speak), and the fact that the fandom does little to criticize these people or their ideas or public behavior has given strength to the haters out there.

I still think that the basic ethos of imaginative and sexual freedom (outside of the grip of religious, social or economic control) and the idea of finding ways to be a cartoonist or animator without being under the thumb of the (quite authoritarian and closed-minded) corporations is sound, however, if the fandom doesn't actually have open debate among it's most loyal adherents about it's more unsavory aspects, it will continue to have serious problems and inherent contradictions and other shit like that there.
